Road racing

Road races are traditionally held entirely on paved surfaces. There are many styles of road racing, including shorter criteriums (most common), point-to-point (longer duration), and time trial (individual).

Cyclocross

Cyclocross (CX) has riders competing across several laps on a winding course of mixed terrain, and often includes navigating obstacles that may involve dismounting and carrying your bike. As such, it mixes multiple athletic endeavors, namely riding and running, with a strong emphasis on skillful bike handling.

Track racing

Track racing is performed on a banked track, atop brakeless fixed gear bikes. Because there are not brakes or shifters, speed is controlled entirely with your legs. There are numerous styles of track racing, from half lap sprints up to 50 (or more) lap endurance races.

Mountain bike racing

Mountain biking is performed on bigger, more robust bikes with flat handlebars. Riders are tasked with navigating rough terrain, that could include trees, rocks, drops and other human-made features.

There are many disciplines of mountain biking, including XC (most popular), endurance (several hours) or downhill (most extreme).

Similar to mountain biking, fat biking uses bigger tire bikes on the same courses, but is generally more suited for snowy trails.
